Eric, this time it's actually Paul. I'm sorry you've had bad experiences on SmartCatholics. Social media is rough; I pretty much stay away, though I admire the charity, humility and warmth with which Val manages the online terrain.

As for the "purity algorithm" line, I'm sorry if it sounded snarky; my intention was to note how in some cases political, moral, or liturgical preoccupations seem to become so much the focus as to displace God, displace Christ, from the center of our minds and hearts. Though I cannot read hearts and may be wrong, I feel like I see that in the examples I gave of priests using blasphemous or sexually disturbing language to condemn politicians or bishops whom they see as enemies.

As it happens, the problem here was that Dennis (the link to his piece was in the first sentence) was suggesting that we at WPI were attached to Pope Francis in this way and would lose heart under a different kind of Pope. I really don't think that's so, nor do I think Mike, Val, or anyone I know had any less love for Pope Benedict or St. John Paul II. We're all sinners and we all need to see where we can do better, but I really don't see anyone who seems attached to Pope Francis as Dennis suggested, either at WPI or on SmartCatholics.

God bless, Eric. I'm glad to have you as a reader.

Unfortunately WPI has its own "purity algorithm" and disagreement is not well tolerated. You can read my rant below if you're curious.

Having said that, I have no doubt that their respect for the pope and their defense of the Church will extend to the next papacy.

The Church is not political but her moral guidance will always apply to current events.

The website is also geared towards Catholic spirituality, and (slightly less) towards theological topics.

There will always be plenty to talk about.

_____________

It was never a very intellectual forum, but now every comment is like walking on eggshells. People are routinely threatened for stating a reasonable, factual, and unwelcomed opinion. Discussions are tightly controlled.

The stated official policy is that members can be removed without warning.

Read it here: https://members.smartcatholics.com/spaces/3161465/about

"Conversations that devolve into arguments are not tolerated. Members who debate without intent to learn or listen will be removed without warning from this group. Clear and repeat offenders will be banned from the network."

Don't ask how they discern the intentions of your heart. I got in trouble for asking. I was told it was "common sense".

I know of two others besides me who were *banned* from the entire network this month by an overzealous moderator (not Mike).

I was actually banned without warning.

Publicly it was said I was warned twice, which was not true.

I later learned that I was told that I was "warned" that if didn't agree with their opinions, that I should find another forum.

The website is unfortunately now best characterized by what I think is best described as "sectarianism".

You can see clearly yourself in the writings and opinions if you look.

______

It's a polarized approach with three aspects:

Othering: Viewing "out group" as fundamentally different or alien.

Aversion: Feeling strong dislike or even hatred toward them.

Moralization: Believing your group is morally right and the other is not just wrong, but evil or dangerous.

_____

"Othering" is most obvious in WPI in assigning a person to the bad group because of an unfavorable comment, a failure to condemn, or some friendly interaction or association with an "other". After that, they're "cancelled" and anything they say is viewed as bad or tainted.

I should say, WPI is run by very good hearted and hard working faithful Catholics defending the pope, and the sectarianism is mostly a sort of exaggerated immune response to the (often correct) perception of same sectarian thinking on the opposite side.

As they say, "hurt people hurt people". Trauma strangely leads to traumatization.

Using the evil against the evil.

I personally believe sectarianism is the root cause of divisions and polarization in the church. Maybe it's just me who believes it. Idk.
